Environment
Elia is always mindful of the local area when carrying out works. The high-voltage system operator takes a range of measures intended to mitigate disruption and impact on the local area.
- The works will only take place during the day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Once work is complete, the land is always restored to its original state.
- Elia guarantees that homes and businesses will always be accessible during the works.
- If local residents are set to experience a temporary increase in disruption for a specific reason, Elia or its subcontractor(s) will always individually notify those affected.
- If normal traffic has to be diverted, the diversions will be agreed with the road authority and clearly communicated to local residents.
-
Schedule
Elia will start to dismantle the high-voltage line on 8 April 2024; it will do this in a number of phases. The work will take one year to complete.
The works will be carried out in a number of phases.
1. Preparatory work will be done at the beginning of April 2024. For example, road plates and access roads will be laid to give machines easy access to the high-voltage pylons. Also, an Elia representative will visit all local residents with a high-voltage pylon on their private property before the works start.
2. The overhead line will be de-energised.
3. Next, protective wooden frames will be installed along the roadside.
4. In a later phase, a roller will be used to remove the electricity cables.
5. The pylons will then be removed with a tall crane. The final step will be for Elia to remove the foundations and carry out restoration work.

Elia starts dismantling of Mouscron-Zwevegem high-voltage line
High-voltage grid operator Elia has started dismantling the 70,000-volt line between Mouscron and Zwevegem. The line was built in 1936 and provided the region with electricity all this time, but it has become obsolete and is being dismantled. Due to the way the power grid was built, it does not need to be replaced. The works will start in Mouscron, proceed in phases through Kortrijk and Zwevegem, and will last one year.
