Ecological corridors
As part of Step 2 of the Boucle de l'Est, a number of environmental measures are being taken. Their aim is to mitigate and/or compensate for the impact of the electrical infrastructure on their immediate environment.
Last week, with the fine weather favouring the growth of vegetation, we were able to observe the results of the work in the wooded areas under our lines.
Here are a few examples of vegetation in different places and at different stages of growth.
As a standard practice, vegetation beneath electrical conductors must be cut back to prevent it getting too close to the installations for safety reasons. Any contact with the conductors could jeopardise the reliability of the installations and, consequently, the electricity supply.
By developing these areas, we can reduce the need for human intervention to maintain them. What's more, the species selected are indigenous and encourage local biodiversity.
To develop these areas, Elia works with Ecofirst, which has excellent knowledge and expertise in this area. Local stakeholders are also consulted.
So far, 800 hectares of woodland have been converted by Elia into ecological corridors in Belgium (mainly in Wallonia). The aim is to reach 1.150 hectares by 2030.
