Kobbegem-Relegem

Restructuring the electricity grid in the Asse region.

  • texteBenefits to society
With this project Elia is preparing the electricity grid around Asse for the future by means of restructuring works. These works are necessary to prepare the electricity grid for increasing energy demand in the surrounding area. For example, the increase in the number of electric cars, the use of heat pumps and the electrification of businesses.

The works will involve strengthening the Kobbegem high-voltage substation in Breker and adding extra 150-kV conductors to the branch line to the high-voltage substation. Elia will also dismantle the Relegem high-voltage substation in Obbergen and the corresponding high-voltage line.

This project will enable Elia to continue to guarantee the reliability of the electricity supply for businesses and citizens in the region.
  • texteThe route

The project will consist of three subprojects:

    • Add extra 150-kV conductors to the branch line to the Kobbegem high-voltage substation
Elia will strengthen the existing branch line to the Kobbegem high-voltage substation by adding extra 150-kV conductors over a distance of 200 metres. The branch line connects up to the high-voltage line between the Bruegel (Dilbeek) and Verbrande Brug (Grimbergen) high-voltage substations. The existing high-voltage pylons will be retained and do not need to be strengthened.
    • Strengthen the Kobbegem high-voltage substation:
Elia will carry out works on the Kobbegem high-voltage substation to enable it to meet growing demand for electricity in the region. The current transformer will be replaced with a new, more powerful one. Two new buildings will be constructed as well: one for the Fluvius medium-voltage installations and one for the Elia relay room. The relay room will monitor operation of the high-voltage substation.
    • Dismantling of the Relegem high-voltage line and high-voltage substation:
Elia will dismantle the Relegem high-voltage substation and then leave the site. Elia will also dismantle the high-voltage line (150 kV) that connects up - from the Relegem high-voltage substation - to the high-voltage line from the Bruegel high-voltage substation.

  • environnementEnvironment

Elia is always mindful of the local area when carrying out works. The high-voltage system operator takes a range of measures intended to mitigate disruption and impact on the local area.

    • Work will only take place during the day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
    • Once work is complete, the land is always restored to its original state.
    • Elia guarantees that homes and businesses will always be accessible during the works.
    • If local residents are set to experience a temporary increase in disruption for a specific reason, Elia or its subcontractor(s) will always individually notify those affected.
    • If normal traffic has to be diverted, the diversions will be agreed with the road authority and clearly communicated to local residents.

  • Schedule

Elia will start works in the Asse region in January 2025. It will do this in a number of phases, ending in December 2027. An overview of the works follows below.

Phase 1: modifications to the Kobbegem high-voltage substation

    • Works to start: early in 2025
    • Works to end: 2026
Phase 2: the addition of extra 150-kV conductors to the branch line to the Kobbegem high-voltage substation
    • Works to start: 2025
    • Works to end: 2026
Phase 3: the dismantling of the Relegem high-voltage line and high-voltage substation
    • Works to start: 2026
    • Works to end: end of 2027
