Start of works at Aalst high-voltage substation
Elia is preparing the Belgian high-voltage grid for energy transition. As part of strengthening the grid, Elia is renovating Aalst's ageing high-voltage substation on Erembodegemstraat. In fact, the substation is a crucial link in the region's energy supply security.
Working towards a future-oriented high-voltage substation
Aalst's high-voltage substation was built in 1978. Due to outdated equipment and technologies, changing energy demand and more solar and wind energy, the high-voltage substation needs to be adapted.
Elia will start renovation works in the spring of 2022. A new GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) installation will be built in the high-voltage substation. In GIS installations, SF6 gas insulates the components. This makes the installation smaller and more compact than an AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear) installation.
In order to integrate the high-voltage substation into its surroundings, the project will be adapted to fit its environment. This will create a 'transitional park' between the large city park, the high-voltage substation and the Zuidkaai project.
Elia is working on a future-oriented high-voltage substation in Aalst, thus continuing to ensure the electricity supply for businesses and households in the region. The end of the works is expected at the start of 2027.
