Work on schedule
Work on the Neerwaasten-Wevelgem project is progressing well and is on schedule. Because of this, traffic lights on the N58 can be removed next week and the road released for normal use.
Elia is doing work to strengthen the electricity grid in the Wevelgem and Komen-Waasten regions. Businesses, companies and residents in these regions will only be able to count on a reliable energy supply if a strong, local high-voltage grid (150 kV) is in place.
In November last year, Elia started to run new underground electricity cables (150 kV) between the high-voltage substations at Neerwaasten and Wevelgem. These cables will run through the municipalities of Komen-Waasten, Wervik, Menen and Wevelgem.
Work on schedule
The work is being carried out in phases and is largely taking place alongside the N58 regional road. Work began with the digging of open trenches on hard shoulders and verges. Elia is now running cables in these trenches.
The next phase
The next phase of work will take place alongside farmland. The underground cable work is scheduled for completion in mid 2024.
