Start of reinforcement of high-voltage line between Kruibeke and Dilbeek
The Flemish Government has granted the permit for Elia’s ‘Mercator-Bruegel’ project. This project involves Elia reinforcing the existing high-voltage line between high-voltage substations ‘Mercator’ in Kruibeke and ‘Bruegel’ in Dilbeek. The high-voltage line is being equipped with a new type of electricity cable that can transport more electricity. The completion of the work is planned for the end of 2026.
Reinforcement of high-voltage line
Elia reinforces the high-voltage line (380kV) between high-voltage substations ‘Mercator’ and ‘Bruegel’. The high-voltage line is an important part of the backbone of the Belgian high-voltage grid and is necessary for the transport of electricity throughout the country. The high-voltage line is being equipped with a new type of electrical cable that can transport more power. For this, 64 masts are being reinforced and 6 replaced. The reinforcement will ensure that electricity flows are better distributed and transported via the 380kV grid.
Work in phasesStarting at the end of April, Elia will be working on the reinforcement or replacement of the existing high voltage pylons so that they are able to carry the new and heavier electricity cables. The foundations and ironwork of 64 masts will be reinforced and 6 pylons will be replaced by new ones. Per pylon there is a separate schedule. Local residents will be informed as soon as work starts in their area. This phase is expected to be completed at the end of 2024.
In a subsequent phase, the existing electricity cables will be removed and replaced by the new electricity cables. This work is scheduled for 2025. Finally, Elia will hang beacon balls to improve the visibility of the high-voltage lines for air traffic and birds. The completion of the work is planned for the end of 2026.
