Laying underground cables in multiple phases
Elia will start laying new underground electricity cables in Halle on Monday, 2 August between the high-voltage substations in Buizingen and Tubeke (Oostkerk). The work will be carried out in multiple phases and will run until late 2023.
Laying underground electricity cables
System operator Elia is laying new 150-kV underground electricity cables between the high-voltage substations in Buizingen and Tubize (Oostkerk). The electricity cables will be laid in public land, for example under road surfaces. This will be done by digging an open trench in which the cables will be laid. Elia will then backfill the trench with soil and restore the road surface. Directional drilling will be used under busy roads and intersections in order to limit the impact on traffic. The electricity supply for local residents will not be disrupted during the works.
Multi-phase project
The work will start on Monday, 2 August 2021 in Halle. The entire route is almost 15 kilometres long. The project will be carried out in multiple phases. This will limit the duration and scale of the impact on the surrounding area. On 2 August 2021, Elia will start working in Halle. In a later stage, work will also be carried out in Tubize, about which a separate communication will be sent to local residents in due course. The entire project will run until late 2023.
Dismantling of high-voltage line starting in 2024
The existing 150-kV high-voltage line between Buizingen and Tubize (Oostkerk) is nearing the end of its life. Once the new underground electricity cables have been commissioned, Elia can start dismantling the existing overhead high-voltage line. This will ensure the supply of electricity in the region. The dismantling work will start in 2024. A total of 29 high-voltage pylons will be taken down.
