380-kV loop around the port of Antwerp enters service
Upgrade of Zandvliet-Lillo high-voltage line completed
On 27 November 2020, Elia commissioned the upgraded 380-kV high-voltage line along the A12 between Zandvliet and Lillo. An existing overhead line was upgraded from 150 kV to 380 kV, with 46 pylons replaced one-for-one and new electric wires laid over 16 kilometres. Thanks to a new type of pylon, the view is almost the same. The upgraded high-voltage line enables Elia to transmit electricity more efficiently.
Work ongoing until late March 2021
Elia will carry out further minor work over the coming months, including site clean-up and finishing work, between the Zandvliet high-voltage substation and gate 6 of the BASF site. This work will not entail any disruption to traffic using Scheldelaan (N101) and is currently scheduled to be completed by around March 2021.
380-kV loop around the port of Antwerp enters service
The upgraded Zandvliet-Lillo high-voltage line is part of a new 380-kV loop around the port of Antwerp. During the summer, Elia commissioned the new Lillo-Liefkenshoek high-voltage line over the River Scheldt. Construction of the upgraded Zandvliet-Lillo high-voltage line on the right bank means that the 380-kV loop is now complete. There is already a high-voltage line on the other side of the Scheldt, linking Zandvliet and Liefkenshoek via Doel. The new 380-kV loop will boost transmission capacity and security of supply in the port of Antwerp. This is important for the growth of the port and the resulting increase in electricity consumption.
