Overview of temporary road closures in March and April 2020

In March and April 2020, Elia will continue pulling electric wires on the high-voltage line around Stabroek and Zandvliet. To carry out this work safely, Elia needs to close a number of roads in the area, either partially or fully. An overview by area is provided below (*).

Brief closures of the A12 in Stabroek, the A12 entry slip road and the entry and exit slip roads on the R2 towards Ghent

Elia will be working above the A12 motorway at Stabroek. Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays 8 March, 15 March and 5 April 2020, traffic on the A12 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions.

  • Towards the Netherlands: at Stabroek, only one lane of the A12 will be open to traffic heading towards the Netherlands from Antwerp.
  • Towards Antwerp: at Zandvliet, only one lane of the A12 will be open to traffic heading towards Antwerp from the Netherlands.
  • Towards Scheldelaan: traffic travelling towards Scheldelaan will not be able to use the Zandvliet exit (junction 11). Instead, it will have to follow a diversion via the Antwerpen-Haven (Port of Antwerp) interchange, the R2 and the Lillo exit (junction 12).
The motorway will also be closed completely for short periods between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with the assistance of the traffic police, who will put in place the necessary diversions and provide guidance.

In addition, the slip road onto the A12 in Stabroek towards Antwerp and the R2 (junction 13) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday 5 April 2020. Traffic in both directions will be diverted. Traffic heading towards Antwerp and Ghent will be diverted via Kruisweg and the Kanaaldok B1/B2 interchange (junction 13) of the R2. On that day, just one lane of the A12 will be open to traffic between Antwerp and the Netherlands.

R2 closures and diversion

Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays 8 March, 15 March and 29 March, traffic travelling on the R2 towards both Antwerp and Ghent will be reduced to one lane. The road will be closed completely in both directions for short periods with the assistance of traffic-police teams. All entry and exit slip roads at the Kanaaldok B1/B2 interchange on the R2 (junction 13) will also be completely closed on those days. Through traffic will be diverted via the A12 and the Stabroek interchange (junction 13).

Closure of Laageind

Elia will be carrying out work on Laageind on Sunday 22 March. The road will be completely closed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Signed local diversions will be in place.

Closure of Blauwhoefstraat

Until 10 April 2020 inclusive, Blauwhoefstraat will remain completely closed to traffic from the Noorderlaan intersection up to and including the Lillo bridge. However, Blauwhoefstraat can always be accessed via Antwerpsebaan.
It is possible that Blauwhoefstraat and Noorderlaan may have to be closed for a few more weekends. Details of this will be provided well in advance.

Closure of Kruisweg (N180)

Kruisweg (N180) remains completely closed in both directions until 7 March 2020. It will be completely closed again in both directions from 16 to 28 March. The cycle path will also be inaccessible. Traffic will be diverted via Antwerpsebaan, which runs parallel to Kruisweg. In addition, Kruisweg will be closed in the direction of Bergen-op-Zoom from 8 to 15 March and from 29 March to 19 April. A diversion will be in place via Antwerpsebaan. Businesses on Kruisweg will remain accessible during the work. Project officer Paul Dereymaeker (+32 (0)475 92 39 74) will contact the affected businesses individually.

(*) Please note: If the work cannot be performed on the planned dates due to poor weather, it will be carried out at a later date
